Four years ago, during the isolation of a global pandemic, a little publication was born in defiance of the odds. Soup Can Magazine began as a humble project, inspired by the belief that artists and poets could be together even without gathering in the same room—even when the world felt impossibly far apart. We started moving our art and poetry events to the mailboxes and Soup Can was born. Now, four years later, we’re celebrating not only the journey of this publication but also the incredible women who have shaped it. From poets to musicians, artists to contributors, women have been at the heart of Soup Can Magazine’s story. Their voices, talents, and visions have filled our pages and our events with raw creativity and unshakable strength.
Born in a Pandemic, Blossomed in a Community
What began in a two-bedroom apartment quickly grew into something much bigger. Over the past four years, Soup Can Magazine has published poets from twelve countries, brought hundreds of people together at events, and showcased the art and culture that connect us all. The Canniversary is a testament to the power of this community and to the women who have helped build it. From our favorite women owned venues like The Union Market & Gallery to those that have come and gone like Spacebar in Bradley Beach or Ghost Harbor in Asbury Park.
The Canniversary Celebration
This April, as we celebrate our fourth Canniversary, we’re thrilled to host a night of live music, poetry readings, a pop-up art show, and a canned goods drive to support The Nook in Ocean County. And most excitingly, we’ll mark the book launch of Alise Versella, whose poetry journey began in the very first issue of Soup Can Magazine.
Conclusion: Looking Ahead with Gratitude
As we reflect on these past four years, we’re filled with gratitude for every artist, contributor, and supporter who has been part of this adventure. Together, we’ve built something extraordinary—a vibrant, inclusive community that celebrates creativity in all its forms. And we’re just getting started.
